Long Life Puja Fund

To understand why a long life puja is essential, we must understand the value of the Guru. He is our guide in this life, the bardo, and future lives. He is immensely important. It is not a case where if we ask him to live he will, and vice-versa, but that to offer such a ceremony purifies our own broken samayas.
–Geshe Lama Konchog

For many centuries, Tibetan Buddhists have offered long life pujas to their teachers. The long life puja purifies the relationship between teacher and disciple, and creates the merit for the teacher to remain among us. Since all realization depends on the blessing and guidance of the teacher, this ritual offering practice is extraordinarily precious.

The essential practice for creating the cause for the Guru's long life is harmony between students. In addition, FPMT is committed to offering long life pujas every year for our teachers, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and our immeasurably precious Spiritual Director, Lama Zopa Rinpoche. These pujas include chanting, requesting prayers, meditations, beautiful traditional offerings, modern gifts, and money offerings. All FPMT centers contribute to these pujas, and we invite individuals to join in this special opportunity to strengthen their connection to these teachers.

Long Life Puja for His Holiness the Dalai Lama

His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. Born to a peasant family, His Holiness was recognized at age two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, an incarnation of the Buddha of Compassion. Lama Zopa Rinpoche calls His Holiness “the great treasure of infinite compassion embracing all sentient beings, the sole source of benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, and the sole refuge of all sentient beings.” FPMT is committed to following the advice of and supporting His Holiness the Dalai Lama in any way we can.

From the basis of non-dual bliss and voidness, we ask the Guru to stay with us. Often, with such special gurus, the dakinis ask them to come to pure realms. So it is essential we make requests to stay from our hearts.

Long Life Puja for Lama Zopa Rinpoche

Lama Zopa Rinpoche was born in 1946 in the Mount Everest region of Nepal, and recognized as the reincarnation of the Lawudo Lama, a great yogi. Lama Zopa Rinpoche is the Spiritual Director of FPMT and oversees all of its activities. His Holiness the Dalai Lama says: “Rinpoche is someone who follows my guidance sincerely, very expansively, and with one hundred percent trust. He possesses unwavering faith and pure samaya; not only has he pure samaya and faith, but whatever I instruct, Zopa Rinpoche has the capability to accomplish it.”

It is the light of his holy speech that illuminates the dark ignorance within our minds, allowing us to give rise to compassion, eliminate anger, and so forth. We need to rely on such beings as Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
