FPMT Mongolia: Re-igniting Buddhism in Central Asia

In late 1999, Lama Zopa Rinpoche established FPMT Mongolia (a non-profit religious organization) to help re-light the lamp of Mongolian Buddhist culture - which was almost completely destroyed by the Communist regime - and to provide assistance for the poor and under-privileged. Five years have passed since the project's inception and there is now a great deal to report. The first major success was the establishment of the City Center (known as Shedrup Ling) in the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar. This center not only teaches the Dharma, but also serves as an administrative base for a wide range of programs in Mongolia. With this as a starting point, generous donors from all over the world have helped FPMT Mongolia reach remarkable milestones. These include:

  • The construction of Idgaa Choizinling College

  • The renovation of Dolma Ling Nunnery

  • The establishment of the Dolma Ling Community Center, to carry out social services in Ulaanbaatar.

  • The establishment of the Golden Light Sutra Center in Darkhan, in northern Mongolia to provide teachings and social services to the people in this city and the surrounding countryside.

  • Daily Dharma teachings and meditation classes at the Shedrup Ling and Golden Light Sutra Centers and outreach teachings in prisons, schools, universities and other monasteries.

  • The translation of numerous Dharma books and prayers from Tibetan and English into Mongolian

  • The presentation of the television series 'Discovering Buddhism' to hundreds of thousands of viewers and the broadcast of FM-radio Dharma programs.

  • The hosting of the forth Enlightenment Experience Celebration (EEC4) event in conjunction with FPMT International.

These programs have helped reawaken Mongolia to its rich Buddhist heritage. However, this is simply the beginning. FPMT Mongolia continues to be engaged in some remarkable programs that will deepen the impact of the work already completed, such as:

Please keep in mind that all the services provided by FPMT Mongolia to the people of Mongolia are largely free. More than ever we need your support to complete FPMT Mongolia's mission of FPMT Mongolia, to assist in giving back to the Mongolians the Dharma that they helped to establish and preserve for us. This website is designed to show in more detail the projects of FPMT Mongolia. We have included the estimated costs of running each project, so that you have some idea of what funds are required.
