LP Module 1: By Now I Would be a Fish In this brief clip lama Zopa Rinpoche goes right to the point of what it would be like to be born in the lower realms, using the example of being a fish caught on a hook or a worm being eaten by ants. A short potent reminder that without dharma practice we could take such a rebirth in the very next breath. LP Module 1: 8 Worldly Dharmas After introducing the 8 Wordly Dharmas, Lama Zopa Rinpoche explains how this grasping and aversion leads to the mind being disturbed and not at peace. Conversely when we can let go of our grasping and worldly concerns we can achieve real inner peace. Rinpoche goes on to explain that cutting our attachments also fosters good psychical health and saves us a lot of money! When viewing the life through the telescope of dharma wisdom, which shows us what to practice and what to abandon, we can bring about true happiness. LP Module 1: The Very Beginning Of Dharma In this video lama Zopa Rinpoche explains that the very beginning of the dharma path is the thought of impermanence. Once we have realized the truth of all things being impermanent we can begin to see things as illusory and release our grasping at people and things as permanent. Rinpoche explains that even if one has 100s of qualities, if there is the one mistake of seeing things as permanent, then our actions will not become dharma, the cause of happiness, liberation and enlightenment. LP Module 1: Life is like a bubble A very provocative talk on how quickly death comes. Without any warning we will exhale and no in breath will follow. In that moment we will die. The perfect human rebirth we now have allows us to practice dharma in every second. It is only with this perfect human rebirth that we can achieve happiness, liberation and enlightenment. LP Module 1: Abandon Stretching Your Legs In this video lama Zopa Rinpoche exhorts us to give up on samsara. Quoting past masters such as Lama Tsongkhapa, the 7th Dalai Lama, and Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo, Rinpoche explains that the real samara is not a pace but the continuity of the contaminated aggregates caused by delusion and karma. When we reach the path of meditation we will end this uncontrolled circling. Rinpoche also explains the falsity of samsaric pleasures, which in truth are no more than suffering wrongly labeled as pleasure. Such pleasure cannot increase and cannot last. Moreover we have never had a break from this suffering even once since beginingless time. A wonderful explanation of how suffering arises, how to get free of such suffering, and how OTHERS are the originator of our enlightenment. LP Module 2: Sleeping Yoga In this video Lama Zopa Rinpoche explains various methods for making our sleep time most beneficial. As waking up well is dependent upon falling asleep well, and as falling asleep well is dependent upon the cultivation of a virtuous mind when going into sleep, training in the various sleeping yoga techniques is an easy and essential practice. Employing such a simple technique as holding an image of bright light before falling asleep can help us to wake up early and refreshed. Familiarizing with these techniques each night is also excellent training for the time of death. Remembering to fall asleep in the lion posture, for example, will help us to adopt this posture at the death time, preventing rebirth in a lower realm, while familiarizing with a dharmakaya meditation at the sleep time will enable us to take the three bodies into the path at the time of death. LP Module 2: Offerings Cause Enlightenment What makes the practice of offering to a holy object so special is due to the power of the object. Because of their great power even if one offers only a single grain of rice or a single flower to a statue, stupa or scripture, and even if the offering is made with a bad motivation, STILL one collects the merit that immediately becomes a cause of enlightenment. As an enlightened being we can then lead every single being of the six realms to enlightenment. Thus, the benefits of offering to holy objects is inexpressible. Right now we have this great opportunity and as this wish fulfilling rebirth can stop at any time we should rejoice at our good fortune and take full advantage so we can most quickly help others. LP Module 2: Blessing The Feet In this short video lama Zopa Rinpoche teaches the mantra for blessing one's feet in the morning. After reciting the mantra 7x simply blow on the soles of your feet/shoes or the tires of your car/bike. The power of this mantra will then cause any insect we may inadvertently kill during the day to be born in a higher realm. One can also recite this mantra on water which can then be sprinkled on the tires for the same effect. The mantra for blessing the feet is: OM KHRECHA RAGHANA HUM HRI SVAHA. For an explanation and oral transmission of other mantras to be recited in the morning refer to Living in the Path module two, Taking the Essence For the text of the remaining "Morning Activities", blessing the speech etc, please refer to either Essential Buddhist Prayers, an FPMT Prayer Book vol 1, or the FPMT Retreat Prayer Book. LP Module 3: Losing The I This is an excellent teaching by Lama Zopa Rinpoche on how to meditate on the "I" by recognizing "I" is merely labeled upon what the body is doing. When the body is sitting we say "I am sitting", when the body is walking we say "I am walking". The moment we break the belief in the I as the body we will see that the I really doesn't exist at all from its own side and how we apprehend this real I will change, become weaker. We will see the change in our view and and in our life by meditating like this until ultimately we realize this I that we have held so strongly since beginning less rebirth is totally empty! Rinpoche explains how having such a strong experience of emptiness depends on strong guru devotion. This is the experience of the meditator, the inner scientist!. LP Module 3: The Analogy Of The Movie In this wonderful and short video clip Lama Zopa Rinpoche teaches us how to see all appearances as the movie of our mind. Just as a movie camera projects images on a screen, our mind is like movie film registering all the imprints of life's appearances and our subsequent actions of body, speech and mind. These imprints then play out in our life as happiness or suffering just as a movie's happy or suffering images are displayed on a movie screen. Seeing life in this way we come to understand how our own karma has created the beautiful or ugly objects that we encounter and how it is up to each of us to create the imprints for the life movie we want to see!! This profound teaching emphasizes how even the smallest negative karma must be abandoned and even the smallest virtue must be practiced. LP Module 3: Like A Magicians Illusion When a magician does magic the audience believes what they see to be true while the magician, even if he also sees the illusion, knows it to be a hallucination and does not believe in the appearance. In this video Lama Zopa Rinpoche teaches how to see all appearances like a magician's illusion. By seeing all causative phenomena in this way we come to see how our own minds illusion us and how all that appears as truly existent is just like the magician's illusion. In this way we can cut the root of samsara. Using a very relevant example Rinpoche explains how to do this meditation while shopping and how walking through the kitchen, make-up and different departments of a store can become a powerful antidote to samsara and a cause for liberation. LP Module 3: Ignorance Has Its Own View In this video Lama Zopa Rinpoche gives a very clear explanation of "Gak.cha", the very subtle object to be refuted according to the Prasangika view when meditating on the emptiness of the "I". In our ordinary view we are constantly labeling and believing in the true existence of I and all phenomena, while these things never appear to us as being merely labeled by our minds. It is just this hallucinated view then becomes the cause of our samsara. Rinpoche goes on to explain how the differing views of existence and emptiness are explained according to the four philosophical schools. While all schools hold that superstitious thought based on ignorance is the cause of, or root of, samsara, the object to be refuted and, therefore, to realize as empty differs. To cut the root of samsara we must realize what ignorance believes as truly existent to be totally empty. LP Module 4: Way to Achieve Enlightenment Quickly Lama Tsongkhapa asked Manjushri, who is the embodiment of all the Buddha's wisdom, "What is the way to achieve enlightenment quickly?". Manjushri replied, "Purifying the obstacles, collecting extensive merits ad one pointedly requesting the Guru to receive blessings in the heart". This pith instruction which softens the heart and transforms the mind from the ordinary view of the Guru into a mind that sees the Guru as Buddha is the cause for realizing all the points of the path and becoming a Buddha oneself.
