MAITRI Education programme in villages
- MAITRI Primary Education programme
- MAITRI Village Schools programme has been running since 1999 and is completely free of charge to all pupils.
- MAITRI village schools programme runs its activity on the basis of an innovative close collaboration between MAITRI and the villagers conceived within the framework of rural development .
- The villagers construct and maintain the school buildings and MAITRI provides teachers, educational equipment, materials and guidance where appropriate.
- MAITRI provides aid in kind to poorer pupils .
- The programme is divided into formal education based on the Indian government's curriculum, and non-formal education up to 6 th grade.
- The programme is conducted through the medium of English and, being secular in delivery, it is open to children of all faiths.

- No selection procedure is pursued as all children are expected to attend the schools: through the live-in presence of its teachers and the supervision of its field workers MAITRI requires that the villagers send their daughters to school while pursuing the attendance of all children from lower castes.
- The 4 villages chosen to date are part of clusters of villages which lie in very remote areas of rural Bihar - two of them are extremely difficult to reach in the rainy season.
- MAITRI primary education programme employs local Indian teachers
- MAITRI Alternative Education programme
- MAITRI Adult Literacy programme has been running at MAITRI's premises since 1997 and has been extended to Dhandhwa Village school for local women since 2002.
